Communication & Media Studies at Carleton University, of the School of Journalism and Communication, now offers a critical media and big data field of study.  It is also part of the Institute for Data Science, and will be the first non-quantitative member of Carleton’s Data Science Master's program participants.

This guide has been assembled in collaboration with the School of Journalism and Communication, MacOdrum Library, and elsewhere, with the aim of curating academic, corporate, civil society, and government resources for students, faculty, and the public to explore this new area of study.  It is intended to support Data Studies generally, in addition to the following courses in particular:

  • (Fall 2015) COMM3409A BIG DATA AND SOCIETY, Special Topic - Media Industries & Institutions - Communication Studies, School of Journalism and Communication
  • (Winter 2016) COMM3403A COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE - Communication Studies, School of Journalism and Communication
  • (Winter 2016) COMM4419A CRITICAL STUDIES OF BIG DATA,  Selected Topic in Media Industries and Institutions - Communication Studies, School of Journalism and Communication
  • (Fall 2016) COMS4407A CRITICAL DATA STUDIES - Communication and Media Studies, School of Journalism and Communication

We hope you find these resources useful, look forward to your feedback, and of course welcome suggestions for additional links and reports.

This will be living page that will be continuously updated, providing resources that wherever possible will be ingested into the library for the sake of posterity.
